It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Darlene Gerrior on Saturday, April 12, 2025. A devoted educator, community advocate, and cherished friend to many, Darlene’s legacy is woven deeply into the fabric of the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) and the hearts of those who knew her.
Darlene dedicated more than 40 years of her life to education and community service. A proud graduate of Pierre Radisson Collegiate and the University of Manitoba, she held a Bachelor of Education, a Post Baccalaureate Certification in Education, and a Master of Education. Her professional journey spanned roles as a classroom teacher, basic French specialist, counsellor, and divisional student services coordinator. Most recently, she shared her experience as a Counselling Practicum Supervisor with the Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg.
In 2022, Darlene was elected as a Trustee for Ward 3 of the Louis Riel School Division and quickly earned the respect of her colleagues. She was elected Vice-Chair of the Board before falling ill. Known for her thoughtful leadership, compassionate spirit, and unwavering commitment to quality education, Darlene brought warmth and wisdom to every decision-making table she sat at.
Her dedication to inclusive education and student success extended beyond the classroom. She was an active member of the Council for Exceptional Children with Behavioral Disorders, a board member of the Indigenous People’s Alliance of Manitoba, and served as a public representative on various health and professional advisory committees, including the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s Patient Advisory Council and the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba.
Darlene made her home in the St. Boniface/St. Vital area since 1972, where she formed deep bonds with neighbors, families, and fellow educators. She was known for her kindness, whether it was thoughtful gifts for the neighborhood children or proudly sharing their milestones on her School Trustee social media.
Colleague Ryan Palmquist shared, “Devastated to learn of the passing of my friend and colleague… Her voice will be sorely missed in the decision-making rooms of LRSD, and as a warm & caring person, she will be dearly missed in my heart.”
Darlene’s passing leaves a profound void, but her vision and advocacy will continue to shape the lives of students and educators in Manitoba for years to come.
She is survived by loving family members, friends, neighbors, and countless colleagues and students whose lives she touched.
In the words of Darlene herself:
“All learners deserve a high-quality education, and we can provide this in LRSD.
Rest peacefully, Darlene.
Your love for learning and care for community will never be forgotten.
